Ever wondered how old your dog or cat is in human years? The old rule of thumb was simply multiplying your pet's age by 7. However, veterinary science has shown that pets age much faster during their first two years of life, and then the aging process slows down. Furthermore, larger dog breeds tend to age faster than smaller ones.

How Pet Age to Human Years is Calculated #

The calculation guidelines are broken down as follows:

For Cats:

• The first year of a cat's life is equivalent to about 15 human years.
• The second year adds about 9 years (making a 2-year-old cat roughly 24 in human years).
• Each year after that adds 4 human years.

For Dogs:

• First Year: Equivalent to 15 human years across all sizes.
• Second Year: Equivalent to 9 years (total 24 human years).
• Subsequent Years: Small dogs age about 4 human years per year; medium dogs age 5 years; and large dogs age about 6 years.
